I grew up on an island in the Pacific Northwest, filled with majestic old growth forest, open spaces that you could hike and experience the ocean. Our idyllic small town had beaches filled with rocks, driftwood, beach glass and anything else that happened to wash up on the shore. During the summer, my friends and I played in the streets and all throughout the neighborhood till late at night—until my parents rung the infamous cow bell to tell us to get home. Not unlike our 10pm alarm in downtown Whitefish, my hometown cowbell could be heard from blocks away!
When I was 10 years old, those carefree evenings of fun came to an abrupt halt. At the age of 10, kids could start working in the raspberry fields. The Pacific Northwest is teeming in strawberries, blueberries and raspberries, and before the invention of automated machines to harvest the fruit, school kids and migrant farm workers did the heavy lifting for local stores and businesses who made products from the fruits.
The work was tedious and the days were long. We got on the bus at 5:30am, sleepily grabbing our seat with our brown lunch bags filled with frozen drinks (to be drunk later when it was so hot outside) and whatever mom packed to eat.
Still groggy after 45 minutes on the bus, we arrived at the berry fields. We’d file out, pick up a bucket, and fasten the string securely behind our necks to keep the bucket of picked berries at belly height. This way, we could use two hands to pick the berries all day. Once filled, we’d empty the full buckets into flats that were weighed and tallied for the payment we’d receive later in the month.
Every single kid that I knew worked in the berry fields. We all had our reasons—some to escape the chores at home and earn some money; some just wanted to listen to music while picking berries with their friends.
My motivation? To earn enough money to buy a bike. Not just any bike, a bright, sunny, yellow Coast to Coast 10-speed. I labored all summer. I was so young and sooooo SLOOOOWWWW.
But, I did it! By the end of the summer I had enough money to go to the shop with my parents and plunk down cash for the 10-speed bike. I felt so accomplished as I walked out with the bike, and promptly told my folks I didn’t need a ride home… I had my own two wheels now! The freedom of it all!
I’m sure you, too, know that feeling when you get something new and you’re SO EXCITED. You work hard, you dream about it before it’s actually yours. You think about how your life will change once it’s yours. You manifest your dreams into reality.
“Luck comes to you disguised as hard work all tied up in a bow.”
Well, here I am. No longer a 10-year-old, and, as a matter of fact, almost 50 years later, I’ve just received something new and I’m reliving those feelings of excitement again. I’ve dreamt it, I’ve manifested it, I’ve worked hard and I am humbled, honored, and ecstatic to transition into the world of Yoga Studio Owner.
Yoga Hive Montana contains the uplifting energy of years of practice and dedication to the embodiment of a lifestyle of Yoga by all who enter the studio.
It holds the positive energy of instructors with a strong practice of yoga who are teaching because Yoga is Life, Yoga is a Lifestyle to Share, The Yoga Works.
If the walls could share the love that has been built with years of healing and self reflection by its members, they would surely have a lot today. And although the studio is in a building, the studio really isn't about the building.
It's about the members, the fabulous group of regular people who come from all walks of life, who enter the doors with hopes and plans for a new beginning, a new way of thinking, a great workout, and mindfulness.
It’s the people at the studio who create the energy, who greet each other as if it's the first time (and since COVID began, it is the first time for some!), a group who welcomes all who arrive to their mats, who support each other, and whose laughter and tears are what makes up the studio.
I'm so excited to share my vision that brings Yoga Hive Montana into a new chapter. The summer schedule is set, the instructors are strong, the energy is fabulous!

Hello Columbia Falls! We're Back! It goes without saying that all of us were heartbroken when the studios in Columbia Falls and Kalispell had to close permanently due to COVID.
Since the closure, I have been dreaming of bringing yoga back to Columbia Falls. There have been times of BIG brainstorming sessions with fellow yogis. We wanted it, we dreamt it, we meditated on it, we are living it!
We are sharing space with Iron Hawk CrossFit, who is opening their third location in Columbia Falls. Remember where the Psychic was located? In between the Carwash and Berube Physical Therapy? On Hwy 2/Hwy 40, at 906 9th St W. New fresh paint has brightened things up. There's a new bathroom, and a wonderful open area with plenty of room for Yoga Hive Montana to host Yoga Classes. Watch for the new signs and flags!
The schedule is published within our current schedule (just find it beginning June 19th). You’ll find a class almost every morning and most evenings. We're excited to bring back our strength and balance classes too!
To celebrate the reopening of Columbia Falls Yoga, we are offering $5 classes for all yoga classes in the Columbia Falls space for the month of June! Grab your mat and meet us there! We can’t wait to teach! We can’t wait to see you!
It all begins on June 19, 2021!
